Council Approves Revised Agreement For Falls Lake Water Quality Protection
On Jan. 22, the Raleigh City Council approved a revised agreement, which extends its original agreement with the Conservation Trust for North Carolina (CTNC) to work cooperatively to facilitate strategic land purchases aimed at protecting the Falls Lake water quality.
Originally, the Council agreed to the pact in January of 2006. Under the terms of the revised and extended agreement, the City will continue to work with CTNC and assist other state and local governments and conservation groups (Eno River Association, Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association, Tar River Land Conservancy, Triangle Greenways Council, Triangle Land Conservancy) in funding property purchases within the Falls Lake watershed in order to protect and preserve its water quality both as a public water supply for the City of Raleigh and a recreation resource for the entire Triangle Region.
The City has provided $3 million to date through the work with CTNC for these land purchases, which with funding from its other Upper Neuse Clean Water Initiative funding partners has resulted in more than 38 miles of stream buffers and 3,257 acres of land being acquired in the watershed. The partners are working on other projects in progress totaling 30 miles of stream buffers and 3,089 acres.
