According to the bi-annual population estimate released today by the City of Raleigh Planning Department’s Growth Management Division, Raleigh’s estimated population as of Jan. 1, is 385,507.
Raleigh’s estimated population increase represents 5,334 more people since July 1, 2008 when the Capital City’s estimated population was 380,173. Since Jan. 1, 2008, Raleigh’s population has increased by 11,187 or 2.99 percent. Estimates are based on the number of dwelling units, the average number of people per household and the dwelling occupancy/vacancy averages.
Since July 1, 2008, about 2,430 housing units have been constructed or annexed in the City of Raleigh. The areas with the majority of newly added population since 2000 continue to be in northeast Raleigh, including Wakefield, northwest Raleigh including Brier Creek and southeast Raleigh outside the beltline.
“While the growth rate dropped slightly and the economy slowed in late 2008, Raleigh still added the same number of people in 2008 that it added in 2006,” said City of Raleigh Planning Director Mitchell Silver. “The economy has affected Raleigh’s growth rate, but the area still remains one of the fast growing regions in the country.”
